A Tale of Two Footballers

Aboutrika is a very famous Egyptian footballer and has helped Egypt to win Africa Cup of Nations (ACN) in two successive times, the latest was in Ghana in 2008. He has been dubbed as the Egyptian Zinedine Zidane for his skills and excellent vision on the field. He is famous in Egypt for his modest personality and his trade mark celebration after scoring goal by prostrating on the ground, and also for his charity works.

In a group match against Sudan during ACN 2008 in Ghana, Aboutrika openly showed his support to Palestine by lifting his jersey and displaying his T-shirt with the slogan 'Symphathise with Gaza' in support of Gaza as he celebrated his goal. This was as a show of solidarity with the people of Gaza in facing the blockade imposed by Israel and indirectly supported by Egypt. For his act, he has been yellow-carded and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has issued a warning to him.

He is a favourite among Palestinians who consider him as their hero. During ACN 2006 where Egypt also emerged a champion, he also lifted his jersey to display the words 'We sacrifice ourselves for you, Prophet Muhammad' in response to the blasphemous Danish cartoons.

Frederic Kanoute is a French-born Malian national player who plays for Sevilla in the Spanish League (La Liga). He has saved a mosque from closure in Seville by paying more than 500,000 euros so that fellow Muslims in Seville would not find themselves without a mosque. He regularly performs his prayers even in the locker room.

He has also created a foundation in Mali to help children, particularly orphans. On 07 January 2009, he has received a yellow card for displaying a shirt in support of Palestine after scoring a goal against Deportivo La Coruna. The Spanish football federation also imposed a fine of 3,000 euros on him for the 'offence'.

Both of them are exemplary Muslim sportsmen and should be emulated by all. Sadly in Malaysia, our footballers are famous for their indiscipline and bad attitudes, or even for eloping with actresses. No wonder we are slipping away in the world ranking.

Waiting for Franck Ribery, Nicolas Anelka, Robin van Persie and others to do similar acts in the near future.
