Skyscrapers in the Gulf States

1. Burj Dubai

Burj Dubai is a skyscraper that is scheduled to be finished at the end of 2008 and costing about $4.1 billion. It will be the tallest man-made structure in the world when completed with its height of 2,684 feet or 818m. The Burj Dubai will feature 56 double-decker elevators that are estimated to be the fastest elevators in the world at 40 mph. It is scheduled to be occupied in 2009.

2. Burj Al-Arab


Burj Al-Arab is a luxury hotel located in Dubai and at 321m (1053 feet), it is the tallest building used exclusively as a hotel. It stands on an artificial island near the famous Jumeirah beach.

3. Rose Tower
Rose Tower is a 333m (1093 feet) building in Dubai and is still under construction. Once open, it is expected to become the world's tallest hotel, surpassing Burj Al-Arab.

4. Dubai Towers (proposed)
Dubai Towers is a four tower complex proposed in Dubai and the heights are not known. It is believed that the tallest tower will be about 400m and the other two will be more than 300m.

5. Burj Mubarak Al Kabir
Not to be outdone, the Kuwaitis are proposing to build the tallest building which is supposed to be about 1,001m. It would be part of Madinat AlHareer, an $86 billion development project on a natural desert reservation in Kuwait.


Points to ponder:
'And that you will see the barefooted ones, the naked, the destitute, the herdsmen of the sheep competing with each other in raising lofty building'.

The above hadith is part of the second hadith from anNawawi's 40 Hadiths on the signs of alqiyamah mentioned by the Prophet (pbuh). The Prophet (pbuh) mentioned the building of highrises by Bedouins as a sign of the day of the judgment, by the barefooted, naked, primitive shepherd. And not too long ago (even in the early 1900s), the people of the Gulf were just only primitive herdsmen of the sheep, but now, they are building tall buildings in the desert.
